This year I am going to start working with moving image, and need to begin somewhere, so here is my tentative toe dipping into video. Using the basic features of FCP as I get to know my way around.

I often find self-portraiture a difficult thing to produce, and I think self-performance for film is even more so, so this was an interesting attempt, definitely wish I had some models at my whim :)

Music: Madonna - Frozen (Acapella Version)

This is a short film piece I created last week. (Use the youtube link, blogspot's displays it in a strange ratio). I Was actually surprised with the feedback I go,t quite a few people really liked the style, the idea etc so that was a great response. I thought people might think it was weird or too raw.

I still don't have any exciting footage shot to play around with, but I have been getting absorbed with FCP. There is so much to do, that's before even Motion and Compressor. It's like PS on steroids to me at the moment!

Hope to keep a steady stream of videos going on, am shooting at the end of the week, so will try and get some cool footage :D

After an exciting summer photography wise, the rest of my year was quite dull. I ended up working a lot of overtime at H&M and then full time for a month or so just to stop myself burning up all my savings. While it wasn't exciting, I have managed to upgrade my camera, which means it wasn't all a complete waste.

This year I have lots of cool ideas, projects and events on the horizon, so I really want to throw myself in. Over the christmas holidays, I was getting agitated and with a lack of models, decided to self-portrait. Here is a rather eclectic mix of imagery.

I have some shoots over the next month, so hopefully there will slightly more exciting pictures soon! :)

V&A and Motion Media

A little while ago I wrote about my day assisting Peter Kelleher and his wonderful team at Motion Media. Who I guess are the in-house visual production department of the V&A.

A few weeks ago, the video of the Yamamoto show went live into the V&A web channel. It looks fantastic. The rolling side shots were filmed by Maike, on a SteadyCam rig - and they look fantastic. You feel weightless as you float alongside the models. The team very graciously included me as part of the production in the credits, even though I think I added little to the video!

As I am completely new to videography, the entire day was an interesting experience for me, and with the powerful lighting set up in the Raphael Gallery I found it a slight challenge! The lights gradually grew brighter as the show went on, and failing to alter the aperture, a lot of what I initially shot on the first few runs was wasted.

However, I went up to the balcony for one of the afternoon runs, and it was an incredible spot. The Raphael Gallery looked amazing from that vantage point, and some of the balcony shots were included in the video which was cool :)

ART;/fashion

The last month or so has been extremely busy for me, which is great. While not strictly photography, it has been something to do with fashion, and creativity was in abundance so I was having fun!

A couple of months ago all the volunteers of the art gallery that I work at were asked if they wanted to organise any events for Sundays, when the gallery was normally closed. In the end, I think the only other event was a joint exhibition by a couple of the helpers. I didn't think much of my idea of a fashion show, and slowly began to plan it bit by bit. It soon became apparent that it was going to be a lot bigger than I had thought. Toward the end I was devoting 3 or 4 hours a day solid, sometimes more to planning, organising and arranging.

The actual day of the show was amazing, it was very stressful from my point of view, but I absolutely loved it. The thrum of people was actually a buzz; there was about 20 at one point in the small backstage area. Designers, stylists, models, hair and mua, photography assistants etc.

Now in the back of my mind, I know I need to concentrate on my photography more for awhile, but I definitely want to do this again, big and better and bring on board everything I learnt from my first experience.

We had a blog running for the entire project, and there are loads of pictures of work in progress leading up to the event, and a range of images from the day of the show also!

Summer of FES-T-VALS; SIX Magazine

So over a month ago now, I had my first really important shoot (for myself) which was for SIX Magazine - a relatively new, but rapidly growing ethical high-fashion magazine. They have just released their second issue, and it's definitely worth reading!

I initially got in touch with the editor-in-chief, Alina, with the hopes of helping out with the magazine, in any way I could. After meeting Alina, who was so friendly and helpful, it became apparent to both of us that I really wasn't experienced enough to work on the publication directly, however Alina gave me the opportunity to do shoot a small feature for SIX. Which, in some regards, was even better!

The concept for the shoot was relatively simple. We wanted to produce 6 or 7 images, in 'street fashion' style, with a little more construction of imagery. We had a really good stylist - Thea come on board, who sourced some really great ethical/sustainable designers and products, and seemed to have such a natural talent for putting the looks together.

I also had my friend Josh Andrews assisting me for the shoot, which was a massive help, and he is a really good photographer in his own right. I do think the 8-9 hour shoot may have put him off fashion photography though :)

Yamamoto's Fashion in Motion @ V&A

On Friday I was lucky enough to be involved with the Yohji Yamamoto 'Fashion in Motion' event at the V&A Museum. I was working with Peter Kelleher and his media team throughout the day, and I learnt so much from them all, it was fantastic. I got to shadow Maike Zimmermann for a lot of the day, whos knowledge of video and film was just what I was looking to tap into, and managed to pick up a few things from her. Watch out Mert & Marcus, I am going to be shooting next years Versace ad with Ms. Fox ;)

Yamamoto has produced some incredible work, and while a lot is extremely eccentric there is some beautiful pieces also, and the show was a great testament to him.

While I did not get much opportunity to take my own shots, I was not really fussed, as for me the day was more about being involved in that enviroment and developing a better understanding of it.

Hillview & Young Fashion

So a couple of weeks ago I went to Hillview School for Girls, where one of my neighbours is the head of fashion/textiles. The Fashion students and Photography class seem to mix quite alot which is obviously a fantastic thing, for both sides, and will hopefully grow into some exciting partnerships for the students!

I spent the day at the school, chatting to students and going through Photography sketchbooks with the kids. It's a real strange feeling, as only last year I was sitting in a classroom, with quest lecturers going through my sketchbooks. I also gave a talk to the two classes, about uni, photography in general and went through my portfolio briefly. I tried to keep it short and interesting, as I am fully aware of how boring people talking about themselves and their work can potentially be!

So, this week just gone, I went back to the school as the Fashion students (Year 12, along with the lower school) were holding a catwalk show to exhibit all their work. The Photography class (well, some of them) were there to capture the event. I was half there to take my own pictures, but also to try and help/instruct the students on the best ways to shoot. They all did really well, considering the shoot went on for well over an hour (which is a marathon compared to the 10 minutes of the Yamamoto one I did later on in the week).

I am really looking forward to going back next year to see them all in the final year and how their works have progressed :)

So, never done any 'gig' photography before; to be honest, I never had the desire to really. However, I was asked by 3point1 to come along to their first gig as a full band (previously just a duo; vocals and producer/keys).

I am not quite sure how to describe their sound, but they say 'pop/R'n'B/Gospel' and just that mix of sounds caught my attention and I thought why not. As well as being really - really great musicans, creating some beautiful songs, they are so friendly.

After spending years clubbing to pop, R'n'B and DJ mixed tunes; and just growing up generally, I lost all interest in live bands awhile ago, but these guys really sparked a renewed interest. I will definitely be following their progress.

Also, Maighread the singer who gave us the stunning live performance during the Wear Chemistry Stopping-Traffic asked for a couple of shots as we were finishing. It was literally about 10 seconds while the lights were available so didn't really get much, but here are a few I shot for her.

It was a really fantastic opportunity for me, and the incredible pace of the shoot was exciting - had a great time, got to shoot with my friend Josh also, which made it less stressful worrying about getting all angles in the quick time!

Megan Fox / Armani

Just seen this video, via Fstoppers. The still pictures from the shoot are fantastic (How could they not be, with the talented Mert & Marcus shooting the powerful Megan Fox). Yet the video for the campaign is absolutely stunning. The mood, atmosphere and sensuality it creates is amazing. I don't know how much of this is Megan and how much is Mert/Marcus but either way, combined the results are great. The subtle use of stop capture for some shots is subliminally eerie, and weaves perfectly with the music.

Absolutely love it.

Ode to Diana

At the end of last year I bought myself a 35mm Back and a Ringflash for my Diana F+, to reinvigorate my passion with lomography and film in generally. I have not actually used them much until the last few weeks, where I have started to experiment.

It seems I really gave myself problems by getting both and/or attempting to use both at the same time. The Ring flash, when attached to the Diana F+ takes up 80% of the viewfinder (which is already misaligned due to not being SLR) and the 35mm Back obviously has a smaller frame, so you have to guess at about the middle 50% of the viewfinder. When using the Ringflash with the 35mm Back on, the flash mount doesn't clip onto the body properly, so I have to use some gaffa tape to secure it (though I like that rugged, war-torn look!)

These things combined make for view tricky shooting! That's all before you consider getting the distance/time to work with the iso and light!

All this said, I am still slowly falling in love with the primalicity (just made that up - sounds good) of the Diana. The beautiful softness of the images, and the multitude of pictures you can create is wonderful. The 35mm Back for instance comes with 4 different frames. Means you can make square pictures, panoramics and have the film perforations on or off. With the Diana's manual film wind, you can easily make multiple exposures or long strips of a panoramic scene. I've not really achieved any of this yet, and am happy to have cracked lining the subject up through the vague effort of a viewfinder :)

One of my favourite things about the diana, with the ringflash is how legendary it looks. Life is all about looking good. Or something. I have so many people stop and ask about it, people are so intrigued by it - it makes it so easy to take pictures of people! My initial ideas of using the Diana were to attempt some Street Fashion photography, akin to Facehunter. I've not done it yet, but this fascination with the camera should hopefully help!

Allegory of the Solarisation

When I used to work in the darkroom, I loved experimenting with solarisation; The unique way each image was altered was beautiful.

With Digital it's not quite so exciting, but the final effects still look cool, having an otherworld-ness to them.

These are not created just by hitting a PS Filter either, rather, I split the image into layers, and inverted one, and them blended the two layers together, and then each picture needs different amount of curve work.

Facehunter

After writing about Ten times Rosie and how much I love that book, it seems only right to post about another book that I pretty much flick through everyday.

Facehunter is Yvan Rodic. Started in 2006, with the simple premise of "a man out and about in London and beyond: eye candy for the style hungry", Facehunter is a visual blog of beautiful people, wearing beautiful things in lets face - beautiful places all over the world. Rodic is a lucky man to visit so many places, and take pictures of so many different people.

I first got into Facehunter when he was shown on a H&M Video Podcast. After following his blog for awhile I found his book. The images on the pages just all melt into one constant visual assault. It's wicked. While being aware and conscious of themselves and others, the people in his images are just people, normal people out and about. The way Facehunter manages to take these people, and use their environment to make them look portrayed and out of place is stunning. It seems so effortless.

Inward glance

So, just updated the bio part of my site with a slightly more rambling, yet perhaps more insightful look at myself in relation to photography.

I find it quite sad that I can't remember why or how I became interested in photography. I would love to have a moment or memory that I could say ignited it all. At 14 years old, taking photography at GCSE was the only beginning I can remember really. My education in the subject went on; Art & Photography at A-Levels, then a Foundation in Art & Design specialising in Fine Art via Photography, and ending at 23 years old, with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art Photography. Almost 10 years. Scary. Crazy.

In my attempts to cling onto the idealism of youth and to always have a key to Neverland, I've never really had a clear, concise thought about what is it is I want to do 'when I grown up' apart from the broad notion of 'photography'. Now that I have 'grown up' I think I need to find a new excuse, 'when I get older' perhaps? Troubling.

Toward the end of my degree, and parallel to my life, one of the other a reflection into the other, I became more and more interested in Fashion Photography and the huge spectrum that is involved in a that highly commercially perceived world. While I spent so much of photographic time embroiling the medium with Art, and entwining the two, for some reason I started to reject it. I am not sure if this was just a realisation on my part, a sign of me finally slipping into who I am/want to be (or rather don't want) or maybe just a way of lashing out at what I had been narrowing myself into for quite some time. Deep. My honours dissertation, 'From Page to Wall...' looked at the transition of photography from fashion/editorial to art. 10,000 words of me trying to wrestle an idea of what I wanted I think. I didn't quite achieve, maybe I could of done with another 10,000. Oh my god, no.

Almost straight out of finishing my degree, I got a job as a photographer (& editor, technician, sales person and children's entertainer) at a small photography studio on the fringes of London. This almost destroyed me and any passion I had left for making imagery. Photography can be used as tool yes, but any monkey can press a button. I need something a lot higher than that to fulfill me I think. I hope.

If I was to state what my goals or ambitions are right now, I would say to become involved in an evolving industry, producing fashion and advertising imagery and pictures that have depth, direction and narration while still stating their message and meaning. A fusion of subliminal and overt.

I am on an exploration for my niche, and on the way just want to capture anything and everything that is beautiful. Because, why wouldn't you want to do that? Oh and of course, save the world.

You see? Ramblings! Haha.

I recently bought the Rankin-shot book 'Ten Times Rosie' and the images are absolutely stunning. The book itself presents an interesting concept. 1 model, 1 photographer, 1 designer - 10 different shoots.

New work

This is a preview of what I am working on currently. Self portrait for now!

I am really into the texture of the background at the moment . Feels a lot more intimate and personal. Engaging; White hi-key is great, but oh-so-very clinical and often bland.

These images will be highly desaturated, and along with the definition HDR from .raw images adds, the colours produced work in a perfect blend with the contrast tones of the background. Waffle waffle.

Multiple exposure, my old friend is back with a passion as well. GG!

Night time aurora

One of my old images , is the scene I have before me every evening when I go to bed. The light from outside, both natural and synthetic showers across my wardrobes, intersected with the window pattern.

Seeing how I love the light coming into my room, my curtains - big, massive, heavy black - use to stay open all the time. Now that I am back for the forseeable future, I am attempting to create some sort of nirvana for myself in my room. Thus I put up some voile curtains, which are much more to my liking.

It just so happens that they also, provide a beautiful show of light and shadow every evening!:)

Handheld shots, taken with 2 sec shutter. I'm quite impressed that it's even possible to make out the image. Still young and steady handed then..!

Salon Prive

Salon Prive, Goldsmiths' Hall. London Jewellery Week.

Designers & Models at the finale of the show.

Last week, I was lucky and fortunate enough to get a place as a photographer at The Goldsmiths' Salon Prive event, which took place at the Goldsmiths' Hall, and kicked off London Jewellery Week. (I managed to get into the event thanks to my friend David Webdale, a stunning and unique London based jeweller. Check out his work!) I've never done anything like it before. After doing it though, I want to do more and more. I had an incredible day. The day started off quite, and I sat around for awhile in the morning. The models getting ready, and the designers preparing their jewellery. I didn't mind too much, as the building was amazing, and I had a wander around.

However, from the rehearsal of the show at lunch onward I was on my feet for the entire day, and it was great. We had a practice run, and then an afternoon show for ticket buyers, followed by an evening show for invited guests and finished with a meet and greet and exhibition of the designers work.

To my surprise there was only one other photographer at the show, Adrian Brooks. I was quite nervous seeing as this was the first event I had ever done, I had just come out of university, taking pictures for school. Adrian was incredibly helpful and calming and gave me some real simple, yet very useful tips and pointers. Adrian left after the afternoon show, getting all the shots he needed. I was there with David, so was staying for the entire event.The evening show was quite surreal, seeing as I was the sole photographer. I was very grateful for my camera, and the way it shielded me from the intense stares of lots of beautiful girls!

The entire day was incredible useful, and I learned a huge amount that I think you can only learn from doing. Experience. Trial and error. In some respects I feel I learned, or rather discovered more in one day, than three years of study.

Degree Show

So the Degree Show is all up, well it has been for over a week now, but the show only opened up to the public this Friday evening.

The open night was really cool. The entire campus was packed, and there was so much work. All really varied and a lot of it was extremely talented.

The last month has been hectic. It's also been really fun. I am quite sad it's all over now to be honest! I really doubt that I will be involved in such a large show with so many different people ever again. Which is a slightly somber note, but makes this one so unique that I can just about hold back the tears!

At the start of May I was busy finishing off my journal and support work, which our tutors wisely had us hand in quite early (I say wisely in hindsight, at the time I was beefing!). Once that was all out of the way I was busy getting my images ready for the Degree Show. Two large format prints, 60" x 40", mounted on 5mm foamex. Tetraptych (image composed of four parts!) 16" x 16" prints, lime-wax framed. I also had a couple of 30" x 20" black framed, black window mount prints from semester one which I had in reserve should there be any space for extra work to be shown (there wasn't).

Friday 14th May was when we all started putting our work into the Somerfield Gallery, ready for the next week. The rest of the Fine Art group that were displaying their work in the East Wing had to paint the walls and floors, as the space is used as studios through term, so I think they had more work to do (I did have intentions of going over and helping, but it was busy enough in the Gallery!).

The next week was a crazy one, with some long days in a very hot gallery space trying to curate our work so that it all fitted together and complemented each other. It was so cool to see everyone working together and generally being really mature about where what work should go where, and how to get each piece to fit.

After a long week, we finally had the Gallery looking really good. Many various tutors stopped as they wondered through to say how good they thought the show was, and how it looked a lot better than many of the previous shows in recent years. Always a cool thing to hear!

Here are a few pictures of my work up in the gallery on Friday evening when we had finally finished moving/putting everyone up. I am pleased and happy with how my work looks. I also love the poetic light that falls over the images at certain points of the day. Cute lol!
